Dear Webmaster

Many of you know about online counters and trackers, they are an invaluable tool for seeing exactly what visitors are doing on your website, where they are coming from and where they go after visiting you.

Basically you install a piece of javascript code on your website and the tracking service starts to keep track of all visitors to your website. Most of the time you can also get a visible counter so you can brag about how popular your site is or entertain those visiting your website.

This is not the most valuable use of a counter though. A counter let's you see how many visitors you have on different days, what keywords they use to find your website on the search engines, what website sends you the most traffic, what country your visitors are from and much more.

You will quickly find out if an important site links to you by checking the referrer (that's where your visitor comes from) stats. Maybe someone mentions your site on a forum, when you see the referring url in the stats you can go join the discussion, perhaps giving even more people the opportunity to see the link.

The two trackers I've used myself are

Statcounter.com
Google Analytics

Of the above I  use statcounter on all my sites, mostly because I like that you can see exactly how a visitor moves through the website, step by step. That's something you won't get from Google Analytics.

On the other hand Google Analytics will give keywords info for a much longer time, and for free. Even though statcounter have a free plan, most of the time you want to move on to one of the paid plans to get enough data.

To you success,
