What's a webmaster to do?
It's important to note that the Google updates we are watching unfold rapidly before our eyes have always been connected to Google's webmaster guidelines. Google was always against manipulating the search engines.
The problem arises when seemingly "good" sites get hosed along with the spammers, and this is often the case, even if in the initial phases of an algorithm change. The other issue is that webmasters may think they are not "gaming" the guidelines, but Google may disagree. Your content may be high-quality to you, but Google may not think so.
With the last update targeting exact match domains, webmasters are feeling the crunch, wondering why everything they worked for has now crumbled in one day. Are their websites not as high-quality as they supposed? Maybe. But, the reality is that the web has changed and webmasters must refocus and shift their attention if they want to survive in this new Google paradigm.
