I read quite a few disturbing articles during my "SEM community beat" this week. I learned that Google plans to kill its Product Search listings in favor of a new paid program that it has dubbed Google Shopping. In short, if you’re in the ecommerce biz and you’ve enjoyed free listings in the Product Search before, you need to be aware that the freebie feature will soon be a thing of the past.
Sameer Samat, the VP of product management for Google Shopping, offered up a bit of insight into the changes. According to Samat, “This is about delivering the best answers for people searching for products and helping connect merchants with the right customers … Google Shopping will empower businesses of all sizes to compete effectively, and it will help shoppers turn their intentions into actions lightning fast. Today’s changes are a first step toward providing technology, tools, and traffic to help power the retail ecosystem.”
In a nutshell, Google is maintaining that the new all-paid system will allow more legitimate data to be displayed for searchers.
